Introduction
Fish oil for acne is not something you think can help you with your acne condition. But it has been determined it can help your acne condition.
Fish oil can be obtained from eating cold-water fish, such as wild salmon, tuna, anchovies, cod and trout. But because of my concern about mercury poisoning and I really do not like eating fish three or four times a week, I get my required amount of fish oil or Omega-3 from fish oil supplements.
So how does Omega- 3 or fish oil help with controlling acne?
Acne
To see how fish oil can help you with controlling or stopping acne, we need to understand the mechanics of acne. Acne is thought to be caused by an imbalance in the bodies hormones which causes an over production of sebum (oil) being secreted by the pores of the skin.
Teenagers going through puberty are more prone to acne because of the hormone imbalance brought about by puberty. Other people subject to acne breakouts because of a hormone imbalance are young women, women taking contraceptives and people under stress.
This excess sebum causes bonding of dead skin that blocks the pores. When the skins pores are blocked, it traps bacteria in the pores, resulting in the bacteria growing.
Your immune system responds by isolating the area, removing damaged cells and killing off the attacking bacteria. You can see your immune system working by the redness, swelling, heat and pain that are produced. This is called an inflammation response.
Inflammation therefore is good, but an immune system that responds to aggressively with inflammation can destroy healthy cells that result in more damage than the original problem.
Step in fish oil to help control inflammation.
Fish Oil or Omega-3
Because our diet is high in saturated fats, sugars and protein that will result in excess inflammation, this will cause an over reaction by the immune system to your acne. This can lead to good cells being attack resulting in excess redness and acne scaring.
To reduce this inflammation, Omega-3 or the consumption of cold-water fish, will put a stop to the immune system over-reacting to acne conditions resulting in less inflammation and significantly reduced scarring.
Conclusion
Though you can reduce the inflammation by taking Omega-3 supplements, the best method is to prevent acne. You can prevent acne or at least minimize any outbreaks by proper cleansing and exfoliating to remove the excess oils, dead skin and bacteria.
